What would you like to practise?

Learn Chinese words: reading, writing, listening and meaning

Knowing a Chinese word involves several skills. In Reading, recall the pinyin and tones from the characters. In Writing, write the characters from pinyin. In Listening, recall the meaning of the word you hear. In Meaning, recall the translation from the characters.

Build a word set that matches what you are learning. After registering or signing in, add words from the dictionary, HSK and YCT lists, a word page or My Progress. You can also search for characters, pinyin or a translation here. Choose the skills to practise and start a session.

Recall your answer before revealing it, then compare it with the characters, pinyin and full translation. Illustrations and up to two examples with audio appear when available. Choose I know it or Review yourself: the trainer records your self-assessment and updates your word statuses in My Progress.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an account to use Word Trainer?

Yes. Register or sign in to search here, build your word set and start training. Your word set, answers and position are linked to your account so you can return to them on another device.

How do I add words?

Use the trainer button in dictionary search results, HSK or YCT lists, on a word page or in My Progress. You can also search on this page after signing in. PRO members can import selected words from My Words or My Lists; importing replaces the current word set after confirmation.

Is Word Trainer free?

FREE includes up to 5 words and one new session every 24 hours from the previous start. You can continue an unfinished session without waiting. PRO includes up to 25 words and unlimited new sessions, imports from My Words and My Lists, and worksheets within the worksheet generator quota.

Does the trainer check my answers automatically?

No. After revealing the answer, choose I know it or Review. In Writing, your drawing stays visible so you can compare it with the answer; stroke order and guided practice are available where the dictionary has stroke data. The results describe your self-assessment in this session.

Can I continue on another device?

Yes. Sign in to the same account and choose Continue. Your answers and position are saved. Handwritten drawings remain only on the current page.

When is a word marked as learned?

A word becomes Learned after I know it in all four skills within one session. The first Review answer changes it to Review immediately. If you practise only some skills and choose I know it for every answer, the word remains Learning.

What happens if my word status limit is reached?

You can continue practising. If the current plan prevents a status change, the trainer saves your answer and shows that the status could not be updated.

Can I download a worksheet?

PRO members can generate a worksheet with the words from a completed session. Generation uses the existing worksheet generator quota. The results and their worksheet remain available until you start a new session.
